Covenant House Sleep Out

We all enjoy the comforts of home often without even thinking about it. A couch to relax on after a long day at work, hot showers, a full kitchen—these are basic, everyday necessities for most of us. How often do we stop to picture what it would be like to not have those things? To have something as simple as a bed or even a roof overhead be an imagined luxury? This is a troubling reality for the thousands of kids throughout Los Angeles and across the country who live without the shelter or safety of a home. This November, I will be joining CEO’s and noted businessmen and women nationwide to get a taste of what it is like to spend a night in the street during the annual Covenant House Sleep Out.

The Sleep Out is an event put on by Covenant Houses across the nation where business men and women trade in their beds and homes for sleeping bags and card board boxes in order to raise awareness and money for the homeless youth of America. Last year this event raised over $3,000,000.000 and this year Los Angeles alone is aiming to raise $400,000.00. I recently joined the Covenant House CA Board of Directors and am ecstatic to be jumping head first into the fight on homelessness. All proceeds will go toward the Covenant House campuses and programs which provide not only a safe haven to help youth escape from the streets, but medical care, job training and educational opportunities that will provide them all the support needed to eventually live successful, independent lives.

It’s so easy to shut the front door of our homes and forget about those who are left out in the cold, but there comes a time when you can no longer ignore the problem. There comes a time when words have to give way to action and that time is now. If you are a business professional who would like to come join in on this exciting event, take a look at the Covenant House Sleep Out page to see how. The more the merrier! If you would like to contribute toward our Los Angeles goal, please take a moment to visit my personal Sam Solakyan Pledge Page. Every dollar helps to ensure that a child is safe from the terror of the streets and has the opportunity for a bright future.

Sam Solakyan Sends a Special Thank You to the Glendale Healthier Community Coalition!

 Glendale Healthier Community Coalition Logo

I would like to take a moment in this blog post to send out a huge thank you to the Glendale Healthier Community Coalition for naming me one of the recipients of this year’s Tom Miller Award. It is a great honor to be given this commendation in memory of a man whose passion and generous spirit made such a great impact on our community.

The GHCC along with Glendale Healthy Kids works tirelessly to improve the quality of our community. They provide low to no-cost healthcare for children and work with businesses and individuals to promote a well-rounded environment focus not only on healthcare, but also education and art. Through its many projects, the GHCC promotes the belief that the health and prosperity of a community depends on the participation of all of its citizens. It seeks to foster a volunteer spirit and to nurture creativity and forward thinking. The GHCC Luncheon on November 7th was held in commemoration of the organization’s 20 years of service to the people of Glendale.

If you are looking for ways to get involved in making our city a healthier place, take a look at the GHCC Facebook page. Give them a Like and keep up with what’s going on! Before I sign off, I would like to say congratulations to my fellow Tom Miller Award recipient, Sylvia Lofftus, founder of the Glendale Community Free Health Clinic. It is a privilege to share this distinction with you.

Allow me to introduce myself

Sam Solakyan sitting in a office enviroment

For those of you who don’t know me, my name is Sam Solakyan. I grew up in an exceptional community in Southern California where I am now running a business and raising my family. Since I was very young, I have been inspired by the people surrounding me to work hard and to live with a generous spirit. I have had the great fortune of meeting and working with so many amazing individuals who have such a profound impact on the lives of those around them. The number constantly seems to grow larger as I come across more and more incredible projects championed by dedicated men and women, all striving toward the same goal: to make our world a better place.

It would be impossible for one person to get involved with every single cause, but I am making an effort to learn about and be a part of as many as possible. It is my goal here to bring awareness to all of them so that anyone reading this can get excited and jump in, make donations or spread the word. That’s what this blog is devoted to: putting the spotlight on the great philanthropic work that is being done both locally and around the world. I am thrilled to share about all of these remarkable organizations and to learn about new undertakings. Join me here weekly whether you’re looking for a place to volunteer your time, new ways to give or just to hear uplifting stories. Thank you for reading, and come back soon!
